Rose checked her watch. It was a quarter past nine. The library closed at eight, but being her mother’s daughter, she hadn’t had any problems getting special permission to use it after hours. She didn’t plan on staying too late, though. Another fifteen minutes and she’d go back to her common room.

She carefully placed the book back on its shelf and turned around, only to almost bump into her blond nuisance. Sneaky git.

“Oh. You,” she said by way of greeting. That was all he deserved, really.

“Being a swot again, Weasley?” Scorpius lazily asked, leaning against a bookcase. “You know, there are better things in life.”

Rose looked away, willing herself not to react to him physically. It was a stupid reaction; one she had battled for years. He wasn’t even that handsome. “I was just about to go explore those now.”

He pushed away from the bookcase to block her path. “I meant things like… snogging.”

Rose stuck her nose in the air. “So did I!”

His eyes narrowed. “Is that a fact?”

“Mm, Oliver Paddock seems very interested.” She very pointedly moved around him. “Oh, and you’re not technically supposed to be here, so maybe you should leave before you get us both in trouble.”

As Rose turned and took a step away from Scorpius, she suddenly felt weightless as she was yanked off her feet and slammed against a bookcase. “Ow, that hurt!” she complained, wincing.

He didn’t answer but instead pressed up against her and covered her mouth with his. Her eyes widened and she shoved at him, but he wasn’t budging and she could feel herself reacting. It was as if he controlled her body better than she did, and she resented him for it. His hold loosened, and now would be a good time to slap him, except his one hand had moved up to cradle her cheek and he was kissing her almost sweetly, apologetically, making her head spin.

She, Rose Weasley, was melting into a damn pile of goo.

He finally withdrew just a tiny bit. “You know who you belong with,” he murmured.

She finally managed to free herself. For now, anyway. “You were late!” It had hurt to think she’d been forgotten.

He smiled. Damn that smile. It was as if he knew. “It is late,” he agreed. “See you next week?”

“If you’re on time!” With that, she sauntered off.

Damn hormones.

“Don’t go,” Pansy whispered, cradling Draco’s face between her hands and pressing her forehead against his. “Just... please don’t go.”

“I have to,” he quietly replied. “You know I do. But soon, all this will be over.”

“And then what?” she asked, tears in her eyes. “Then you can go on your next stupid mission?”

He covered her hands with his palms, before sliding them down and circling her wrists, slowly pulling them away. “Then we’ll get married,” he muttered. “You’d like that, wouldn’t you? We’ll move far, far away. To the continent, maybe. Or even further. And we’ll get a nice house with a rose garden for our children to play in.”

She violently shook her head. “You’re speaking nonsense! You know he wouldn’t let you. He’d come after you and k-kill...” She choked on the word before breaking off on a sob.

He shushed her. “Just think of the rose garden, Pansy. In our rose garden, nobody will suffer or die ever again. It’ll be one long happy summer.”

“It’s impossible.” She sniffed.

“We’ll make it possible. Just wait. And should I get lost, I’ll meet you there.” He softly kissed her and then he was gone.

Draco squinted up at the dark clouds above. How fitting. Frowning, he turned his head away.

Pansy stepped closer to him. “It’s not that bad, Draco. As soon as he gets what he wants, he’ll stop picking on you. I’m sure of it.”

Draco snorted. You-Know-Who would never leave him alone – not even if he got ten bloody Potters. “If you say so,” he muttered. He didn’t want this discussion. Not again.

He felt her cool hand on his cheek as she turned his face back towards her. “No. It’s the truth. It has to be. As long as we don’t make trouble, we’ll be all right.”

He drew her closer. Yes, they’d be all right. Because they had to be. Because there had to be a light somewhere out on the horizon for them to stay sane through all this.

Closing his eyes, Draco fervently prayed for peace soon.

Draco closed his eyes and breathed in deep. He could do this. He really could. But maybe he didn’t have to? Maybe if nobody could find him, then everything—the battle, people dying, the constant hate—might be over by the time he was found.

But then again, everything would be over for him if he was found by a ‘fellow’ Death Eater. They would have the excuse they needed to finally end his family’s line.

He sighed. Maybe he should just go for it and try to be the hero… or villain… whatever he would be if he managed to turn in Harry Potter.

Pansy tentatively moved closer and touched his arm. “Don’t do anything foolish,” she said.

“Then what’s left?” he asked, opening his eyes, surprised to find his own wryness intact.

She smiled a little sadly. “Live. Just live.”

Somehow, he found that to be sound advice.
